Ethereum’s 10-Year Plan: Quantum Resistance & Scalability
Celebrating its 10th anniversary, Ethereum has unveiled an ambitious 10-year roadmap, the “Ethereum Lean Plan.” This plan prioritizes three key areas: dramatically increasing transaction speeds, ensuring network uptime, and bolstering security against future quantum computing threats. The goal is to achieve 10,000 transactions per second (TPS) on the main chain and a remarkable 1 million TPS on layer-2 scaling solutions. This will be facilitated by advancements in technologies such as zkVMs and Data Availability Sampling (DAS), allowing for faster transaction verification without requiring users to download the entire blockchain. The plan also focuses on streamlining the consensus mechanism for faster transaction confirmations and improved data handling. New SNARK-friendly code for the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) is under development to accelerate processing and reduce network load, aiming for transaction finality in seconds rather than minutes. A crucial element is the integration of quantum-resistant cryptography to protect user funds and smart contracts from potential future attacks by powerful quantum computers. The Ethereum Foundation has reported significant growth in its strategic reserves, reaching $10 billion, alongside a surge in corporate ETH holdings to 2.73 million. The current market performance of ETH, trading at $3,610 with a 47% increase over the last month, reflects positive market sentiment. The “Ethereum Lean Plan” represents a substantial commitment to the long-term health, security, and scalability of the Ethereum network, positioning it for future growth and adoption.
